Do’s and Don’ts - 2023-24 Grant Round

Do:
  • Focus on the Foundation’s four strategic objectives and explain how your grant activity will help achieve one (or more) of these strategic objectives. E.g., if your activity clearly showcases Australian excellence in your specialty, focus on this.

Don’t:
  • Spread yourself too thin by trying to cover all four strategic objectives, even if your application clearly aligns more strongly with one (or more). E.g., if your application is targeted at ‘engaging Australia’s diverse communities’, don’t feel the need to explain how it also may showcase Australian excellence unless there is a very clear connection.

Do:
  • Clearly explain the tangible outcome and the benefit to Australia of your activity in simple and easy to understand language.

Don’t:
  • Focus heavily on the technical details. Focus instead on the outcomes of your project and what your expertise in your speciality will achieve.

Do:
  • Demonstrate that you have thought about achieving value for money and have personal investment in the outcome. Use your contacts and networks to leverage efficiencies and demonstrate how you have done this.

Don’t:
  • Over inflate your costs or budget. You are more likely to be successful if your grant amount represents value for money related to the outcomes it will deliver (regardless of what that total amount is).

Do:
  • Read the Grant Guidelines closely. Focus on the intended outcomes of the program (page 5). If your grant will help achieve one (or more) of these outcomes, make this clear.

Don’t:
  • Attempt to achieve too much. Instead focus on a few key outcomes that you will be able to achieve.

Do:
  • Clearly spell out the proposed activities you plan to undertake. For example the number of workshops, exchanges, exhibitions, seminars, dialogues, work placements, performances etc.

Our response to Covid-19

The Foundation is operating at a time of unprecedented disruption caused by COVID-19. The pandemic has interrupted many areas of engagement, such as bilateral exchanges and visits, where the Foundation would, in normal circumstances, have operated.

Everyday people-to-people exchanges and sectors, such as education and tourism, have been profoundly impacted. The Foundation is aware of the need to recalibrate some of our programming and activities due to COVID-19 and our current focus takes account of this by seeking ways in which we may help respond.
