On 10 February, the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations Advisory Board held its first meeting for 2026 in Canberra to shape the Foundation’s agenda for the year. The meeting focussed on engaging Chinese-Australian communities. 

The Advisory Board met the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator the Hon Penny Wong, to discuss the Foundation’s work to strengthen risk-informed engagement, advance Australia’s China capability and amplify Chinese-Australian leadership. The Advisory Board also met the Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Jan Adams AO PSM for further insights into the Australia-China bilateral relationship. The day concluded with the 2026 Wang Gungwu Lecture delivered by pioneering Otolaryngology, Head and Neck (ENT) surgeon Professor Kelvin Kong AM. 

This was the first meeting for new members the Hon Mr Simon Birmingham, CEO of the Australian Banking Association and Dr Darren Lim, Senior Lecturer at the Australian National University, whose appointments were announced by the Minister for Foreign Affairs on 3 February.
